There’s something especially beautiful about an early October wedding in New England. The weather is crisp, the light is soft, and everything feels just a little more romantic. Becca and Troy’s October 5th wedding at The Groton Inn in Groton, Massachusetts was the perfect example of why fall is one of my favorite seasons for wedding photography.
Nestled in historic Groton, The Groton Inn is one of Massachusetts’ most charming wedding venues, offering a beautiful combination of classic New England architecture, intimate spaces, and gorgeous outdoor areas. As a Boston wedding photographer, I love photographing weddings here because the property offers so many opportunities for candid, colorful, and genuinely emotional photographs.
Getting Ready in The Groton Inn's New Bridal Suite
Becca's wedding day began in the Inn's brand-new bridal suite, and it was such a beautiful space for getting ready. The suite offers plenty of room for the bride and her closest people to relax, get ready, and enjoy those quiet moments before the day really gets underway.
These getting-ready moments are some of my favorites to photograph. They're not just about the dress, shoes, and details — they're about the champagne, the laughter, the nerves, the happy tears, and all of the little interactions that happen naturally when the people you love most are gathered together.
For me, those unscripted moments are what make a wedding gallery feel like your wedding rather than a collection of posed photographs.
A Shady & Romantic Courtyard Ceremony
One of the highlights of Becca and Troy's wedding day was their ceremony in The Groton Inn's courtyard.
While many couples choose a ceremony location because of the view, Becca and Troy went in a different direction — and it worked beautifully. Instead of having their ceremony overlooking Gibbet Hill, they exchanged vows in the courtyard, which provided a lovely, shady setting that felt intimate, romantic, and completely tucked away from the rest of the world.
And honestly? I'm a huge fan of a ceremony location that prioritizes comfort and atmosphere.
The shade made the October afternoon feel even more comfortable, while the surrounding architecture and greenery created a gorgeous backdrop for their vows. It was a wonderful reminder that you don't always need a sweeping mountain or hilltop view to create an incredible wedding ceremony setting.
Sometimes, a quiet courtyard is even more romantic.
Candid Wedding Photography at The Groton Inn
After the ceremony, Becca and Troy had time to enjoy their wedding day with their friends and family — and I was there to photograph it as it naturally unfolded.
My approach to wedding photography at The Groton Inn is very documentary-focused. Of course, we'll make time for beautiful portraits and the family photographs you want to have, but I also want to give you space to actually experience your wedding.
That means I'm looking for the moments happening in between:
The laugh you didn't know anyone captured.
Your dad's reaction when he sees you for the first time.
Your friends dancing like nobody is watching.
The quick squeeze from your grandmother.
The way your new spouse looks at you when you're not paying attention.
Those are the photographs that bring you right back to your wedding day years from now.
A Beautiful Fall Wedding Reception
The Groton Inn provided the perfect backdrop for Becca and Troy's celebration. With its historic New England charm and intimate atmosphere, it's easy to see why it's such a popular choice for couples planning a Massachusetts wedding.
October was also a beautiful time to be there. Fall in New England gives wedding photographs such a gorgeous atmosphere — warm tones, changing foliage, soft afternoon light, and that unmistakable feeling that summer is giving way to fall.
It's hard to beat.
A Grand Exit in the Courtyard
And then came one of my favorite moments of the day: Becca and Troy's grand exit through the courtyard.
There's something so fun about a wedding exit, especially when couples can incorporate the architecture and character of their venue into the moment. The courtyard at The Groton Inn created a beautiful setting for their final moments of the evening, surrounded by their closest friends and family.
After a full day of celebrating, laughing, dancing, and soaking it all in, it was the perfect way to end the night.
